The Paper Mill Structures - Virtual Museum Project
Community Memories Project
On October 9 2015, plan to stop by the Machine Shop anytime between 11am-1pm at Mill Square to have lunch and share your memories of how the city's paper mill structures have changed over the century. Enjoy lunch and chat with Andrew and Elena about your most interesting memories. Tagona Creative and Destination North will be collecting your stories to be used as records of oral history in an exciting online museum project. There is no charge for the event, but if you have a great story we will invite you to take part in an audio-recorded interview for the Virtual Museum of Canada at a later date. Hope to see you there!

-Destination North, in association with the Virtual Museum of Canada is beginning work on an exciting online history project celebrating the industrial heritage of Sault Ste Marie.
The Virtual Museum of Canada is an online collection of multimedia pieces on entertaining and important aspects of the Arts, Sciences, and History from across our country
The sandstone structures of the former St. Mary's Paper Company are at the heart of the Mill Square redevelopment, the new canal district on the west end of downtown. As the district grows, the beautiful structures are being given new purposes and becoming architectural centerpieces of the Sault. Already the home of Mill Square and The Algoma Conservatory of Music, the buildings are no longer antiquated structures in an industrial operation.
The history of the buildings is as important as their future. These were the first structures constructed by Francis H Clergue and formed the heart of the industrial empire that spawned modern Sault Ste Marie. In his bid to attract massive investor money for his projects, Clergue constructed some of the most striking examples of Romanesque Revival architecture in North America. Inspiring vision and boom and bust drama follow the site for a century.
the Virtual Museum project will explore the history of the structures, and their transformation for modern use in words, photographs and audio and video recording.
the project producers are actively seeking stories from the community about any aspect of the site's heritage, from the Clergue era to modern paper production. stories will be collected in print and voice recording for the museum exhibit.
they will be hosting an event for interested participants to hear more about the project and share their stories.
